one of its popular models. patti ann browne live in the newsroom with the details. >> toyota will recall 2.77 million vehicles worldwide including some of its popular prius hybrid cars. they say there are steering and water pump problems. it is the carmaker's second multimillion-dollar recall, vehicle recall in a little over a month. toyota says the defects have caused no accidents and can be fixed in an hour or so but this could cost hundreds of millions of dollars for toyota to repair, at least according to one auto analyst. while the recall is widespread, the flaws are considered less serious than in previous recalls in 2009 and 2011. in those, unintended acceleration problems in toyota vehicles were the suspected cause of fatal crashes in the united states. toyota this year recaptured the crown of the world's top automaker after last year's natural disasters which temporarily disrupted production in japan and thailand. this latest recall involves fixing a steering component that could be damaged by wear and tear and replacing water pumps on 630,000 gasoline electric hybri
, former d.c. councilman kwame brown will be sentenced tomorrow. he reseened from his council seat back in june and brown is now facing one year in jail. but prosecutors are urging the judge to sentence him to six days in jail and three years supervised release. >>> a sprawpt manager is fighting for his life -- a restaurant manager is fighting for his life. the manager was shot when he confronted some people who were fighting in the parking lot early sunday morning. he got back into the restaurant and two employees called 911. he is listed in critical condition. >>> the alleged east coat rapist has reportedly admitted to raping several women. air op thomas spoke for a reporter for the wash post from the cell where he is awaiting trial in prince william county, virginia. he told the reporter he attacked several women in several states beginning two decades ago but he doesn't know why. thomas is scheduled to plead guilty to one case in leesburg at the end of the month. >>> in the morning line, d.c. united kicked off the eastern conference final against houston. united scored first when a

for them down ballot. this could actually create a problem. scott brown, now the defeated republican senator from massachusetts, lost to elizabeth warren convincingly a week ago today, would be a formidable candidate in a mid 2013 special election. democrats do have sort of a little bit of a cushion. they won seats last tuesday, they have a little senate cushion but i can tell you there's probably some grimaces about the idea if john kerry doesn't get state he'll get defense within senate democratic circles. >> a democratic governor who could appoint himself. >> right. >> or figure out some other way, could run for that office himself and run against scott brown and he would be a formidable candidate. they have some democrats in massachusetts who are possible candidates. but the other piece is susan rice. i have to tell you, be she is so popular with the white house, there is no question in my mind, i've never been more certain about a nomination or the intention to nominate. not just a trial balloon. but she is being blamed by many on the hill, democrats and republicans, and the whi

last thing. scott brown is replaced by elizabeth warren. olympia snowe replaced by an independent. herb cole replaced by tammy baldwin. the pattern in all of those is that it's a more conservative person in the senate replaced by a less conservative person in the senate. maybe fine lines, but that's the pattern in all of them. is one of the kons chemical weapons that democrats might reform the filibuster? >> i hope so. two ideas i'd throw out there. to get rid of it on the motion to proceed. that would reduce everything in half the time we spend on bills. the second, require these people to stand and speak. make them stand and speak. you could have a filibuster clock on your show. it would be mesmerizing. not really actually. people would hate it. they would hate that two people would hold up one judge in illinois. that's what we're seeing. if those senators are held accountable by making them actually stand and filibuster, it would make a difference. the american people will see it. there could be other reforms as well. i put those out there as doable and something that could make a hu

.o.p.'s problem? moderates like scott brown and charlie summers just lost their senate races in massachusetts and maine. both blue states. would their type of republic have won in conservative red states? of course not. until more liberal republicans start winning their races, why should they dictate the terms of a new g.o.p. agenda? yes, republics, of course they need to attract more single women and latinos. but pandering isn't the answer. good policy and good politics is. i don't think it's any harder to convince more hispanics or more single women irish catholics eye tannial immigrants new deal or jfk democrats become conservatives during the reagan area. if you believe like i do that social economic poes are the best hope for the nation. then aban dogging your positions to become more popular is a path to complete irrelevant. did barack obama moderate his views after the 2010 mid terms? did he roll back parts of obama care? did he stop green energy subsidies? >> he aggressively pursued his ayen da with executive order and smart mess sacking and he won re-election. and that's the memo. no
